Administrators called in on Foster + Partners' Silken project
30 March 2009 11.02 GMT (London)
The future of the Silken Hotel project on the corner of Strand and Aldwych is looking uncertain after administrators were called in by BBVA, the Spanish bank of developer Grupo Urvasco, owner of the Silken Hotel Group.
Architects Foster + Partners were appointed by Urvasco to design the hotel, following earlier work on a floor of bedrooms at Silken Hotels’ Puerta America in Madrid. The Puerta America generated significant press coverage when it opened in 2005, due to the involvement of over 20 well known architects and designers in the project.
The London project comprises a 170-guestroom hotel and 90 apartments on the site of the Grade II listed Marconi House. Work on the project has been on hold for several months following a series of contractual and financial disputes. Now BBVA has brought in PWC’s business recovery team to assess the project’s viability.
Consultants involved in the project include Buro Happold, David Longdon, BDSP and Gordon Ingram Associates.
