City of London gives planning consent for 10 Trinity Square hotel
5 May 2009 GMT 18:07:28 (London)
The restoration of London’s 10 Trinity Square has been recommended for planning approval by the City of London Corporation.
US property company Thomas Enterprises has been working with international architects Woods Bagot on a project to create a luxury hotel on the site.
It will convert the Grade II* listed 10 Trinity Square into a 121-bedroom hotel with spa and 30 apartments.
Rob Steul, Principal at Woods Bagot and designer of the proposed scheme, said: “Our vision for 10 Trinity is to restore one of its most important Grade II* listed buildings and create one of the finest hotels in London.
“Trinity Square is a unique site in the Square Mile and overlooking a World Heritage Site at the Tower of London. Upon completion the hotel will be the only one of its kind serving the City and Canary Wharf.
“Thomas Enterprises and Woods Bagot have been working with English Heritage and the City of London to develop a design which removes unsympathetic Sixties extensions and restores the central rotunda space to the building, which was lost during the Blitz. This generous central space will become the new heart of the building, and rival the scale of the Reading Room in the Great Court of the British Museum.”
10 Trinity is the first venture for established US-entrepreneur Stan Thomas into the UK market. His company, Thomas Enterprises, bought the site in 2006.
Designed by Sir Edwin Cooper, 10 Trinity was built between 1915 and 1922, and was originally the headquarters of the Port of London Authority. The central rotunda room was the grand main space of this building.
The venue once hosted the inaugural reception of the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1946.
