More airport hotels for EPR

13 May 2009 GMT 16:34:23 (London)

Following its submission of designs for a hotel at Biggin Hill Airport for planning permission, EPR Architects has announced details of three further airport hotels, at Heathrow.

Construction has just started on a new Hilton International 350 bed conference hotel at Heathrow Terminal 5. EPR Architects is working with main contractors Sisk and Tonik Design on the hotel for client Rising Star LLP Ltd.

The hotel will have extensive landscaped areas, and existing river feature, making the location not just suitable for the Terminal 5 Airport / Conference users, but also a destination location for the domestic market.

The architecture uses traditional materials of brick, stone and tile, which are appropriate for the landscape surroundings. The development of the site is based on a mature consent and will provide fine dining restaurants and bar areas within an exciting 6 storey internal atrium with conference and leisure space within the wings of the hotel.

Planning Approval has also been given by Hillingdon Council to redevelop the Thistle Hotel Heathrow site, close to Terminal 5, for two new hotels designed by EPR Architects Ltd.The first hotel, a new luxury 250 bed hotel will be the first new building for the Guoman Hotels chain.

The second will be a new 353 bed budget hotel for which the proposed brand has not been confirmed. Taking advantage of the locations excellent connections to Heathrow Airport and Terminal Five, the proposals are to demolish the existing 1960’s hotel and replace it with the two new high quality hotels.

Designed as a pair, the hotels will meet the GLA 20% renewable /carbon reduction targets with a combined  CHP plant with biomass boilers and photovoltaic panels on the roof. The hotels have been orientated to minimise solar gain and be visually linked along a graceful curved frontage to help with way finding and orientation.
