The redesign is a crucial part of Taj Hotels Resorts & Palaces’ upcoming plans to renovate the hotel with a sophisticated and contemporary look.

Since opening in 1903, the Taj Palace Mumbai has become internationally renowned as one of the premier hotels in India. The original hotel was commissioned by Indian industrialist Jamsedji Tata and designed by Indian architects.  

According to David Rockwell, Founder and CEO of Rockwell Group: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Rockwell Group Europe to bring their extensive experience and expertise in hospitality to this magnificent Indian landmark.”

The Harbour Bar will feature a solid carved piece of white marble as its central bar, with echoes of its Art Deco legacy in the furniture and finishes.

Leading upstairs, guests will be welcomed into Chef Morimoto’s Wasabi Restaurant, a ‘magic box’ of red lacquer that frames the room. The host stand is backed by an installation of drifting cherry blossoms and the restaurant walls are crafted with traditional Japanese joinery. Placed like freestanding furniture in the space, the sushi counter and teppanyaki kitchen serve as focal points of activity.

Rockwell Group Europe has also re-imagined the private dining room, a key feature of Wasabi, as a bold, sculptural round table that dominates the room and is complemented by an over-scale custom hammered metal light fixture.

The Wasabi Restaurant and Harbour Bar are slated to be complete by November 2009.
