André Balazs has announced the purchase of The Cooper Square Hotel in New York. The property will be the fifth Standard, joining sister hotels The Standard, New York, The Standard Spa, Miami Beach, The Standard, Downtown LA and The Standard, Hollywood.
“We are excited to have the opportunity to, once again, create a new Standard- an intimate and residential alternative to its boisterous sibling above the tracks.” states André Balazs.
The hotel is a 21 storey, 145-room property on the corner of East 5th Street and Bowery at Cooper Square in Manhattan’s East Village. The property’s rooms and suites are larger than the New York average, with fantastic views of the city, including a spectacular penthouse with wrap-around panoramic views and a 1,600 square foot outdoor terrace. Generous public spaces include an outdoor garden, living room, lobby lounge, restaurant and bar, all of which will be reconfigured over the next year. The hotel property has long been sought-after by developers, owing to its prime location in one of Manhattan’s most vibrant and celebrated cultural neighborhoods.
The transition of the hotel into The Standard, East Village will include a refurbishment of the guest rooms, a restructuring of the ground floor public spaces and of the food and beverage offerings. These changes will be implemented gradually, bringing the hotel into alignment with the strong design, operational and cultural sensibilities of The Standard hotels.
André Balazs Properties will be managing The Standard, East Village, along with the other Standard Hotels and luxury properties the company owns including The Mercer in New York, Chateau Marmont in Hollywood and Sunset Beach in Shelter Island. Plans are also underway for a new luxury hotel in Marylebone, London, and for additional developments in New York and internationally.
