J2 Design and Scape Design Associates work on Croatian island resort for Suncani Hvar Hotels

J2 Design have been tasked with the architectural masterplanning and full refurbishment of a 310-guestroom hotel on Hvar Island, Croatia.

Built in the 1960s on a hillside overlooking the Aegean, the project has required complete interior and exterior modernisation with improved access to the beach front. The brief from Suncani Hvar Hotels was to combine a sophisticated and contemporary approach to the hotel with a rationalisation of the levels.

J2 Design have introduced contemporary finishes into the spaces with the use of high gloss lacquer and cool ceramics. The opening up of the spaces with new pivot doors across the public area levels will allow easy access to the external terraces and outdoor facilities, which are being redeveloped in a sustainable landscape project by Scape Design Associates.

Scape's work has involved the creation of new outdoor landscape areas by removing the existing dilapidated indoor pool and basketball courts. A comprehensive new green roof system to the hotel's existing wings has also been introduced. Concrete from the demolition works has been recycled to provide the substrate for this roof, which in turn insulates the pipework providing warmed water for use by the hotel. In addition, 1500m2 of solar panels have been added to the roof to supply power.

The landscape features local materials such as Croatian limestone, and is planted with indigenous species.

The hotel will also feature two new outdoor integrated swimming pools, set across split levels, and two new dining facilities. The project is due for completion in Summer 2007. Suncani Hvar Hotels is majority owned by the Luxembourg-based Orco Property Group, a leading investor, developer and asset manager in the Central European real estate and hospitality market. Orco Property Group also owns the Mamaison chain of seven luxury boutique hotels and serviced apartments located throughout Eastern Europe.
