Superbude, Hamburg
We’re not sure if these buckets, suspended from the exterior of the new Superbude in Hamburg serve any purpose, and frankly we don’t care. They are just one of many witty design flourishes introduced by designer Armin Fischer of 3Meta for hotelier Kai Hollman’s innovative combination of hostel and hotel.
The brief was a loose one, to “utilise objects and materials typical for Hamburg but implement them in new ways and re-assign their functions.” Hence beer crates from a local brewery have been upholstered with genuine leather and transformed into stools. Pallets serve as frames for the couches, vases are made out of wine bottles, and paper cups are transformed into chandeliers.
Plungers are converted into coat hooks and mousetraps are recycled into a pin board. Hundreds of used jeans were cut up and sewn together again as sofa covers giving the cinema lounge a cool denim ambience.
Another highlight is the hotel’s stackable bed concept: a 1968 Rolf Heide design classic rejuvenated to help convert a two-bed room into a four-bed room in an instant. According to Fischer, the friendly and playful design has succeeded in attracting a diverse crowd, from backpacker to business travellers.
