Hyatt at Capital Centre

Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC) has applied to the Guinness World Records for the title of ‘world’s most inclined building’ for Capital Gate, a development designed by RMJM Architects.

The tower is already under construction using the same ‘diagrid’ technology as the Swiss Re building in London (aka ‘The Gherkin’) and the CCTV headquarters in Beijing. According to RMJM, this system – formed by creating triangular structures with diagonal support beams – is cost efficient and environmentally beneficial as it requires less structural steel than a conventional steel frame.

In recent weeks, the tower’s ‘unique leaning posture’, designed to mimic a wave, has begun to emerge as the diagrid curves westward. Construction has already reached level eight of the 35-storey, 160m tower.

When complete, the building will accommodate a five-star Hyatt hotel, the company’s first in the UAE capital.

Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nayhan, Chairman of Capital Centre and ADNEC said the unique branding reflected the unique nature of the building: “The fact that the hotel has been developed specifically for this project indicates an understanding by all involved that this is not an average hotel, in an average building in an average city – this is something unique and very special, which will exceed expectations.”

Gebhard Rainer, Managing Director, Hyatt International (Europe, Africa & Middle East) LLC described the project as “the right building in the right location at the right time.”

Capital Gate forms a major part of the Capital Centre development, the AED8 billion business and residential micro city being constructed around the newly opened Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.

The building’s decorative ‘splash’ structure provides a sun shade for the Capital Gate tower itself, as well as a new and creative treatment for the roof of the existing Grandstand canopy in the adjoining Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre Grandstand.
