The Frederick Gibberd Partnership have completed a new boutique hotel using a wealth of Christopher Guy furnishings for Bespoke Hotels’ latest property.
The past couple of years have seen Marylebone emerge as one of London’s more fashionable neighbourhoods. Its village-like feel and the relative lack of homogenised chains on its high street have encouraged a proliferation of boutique shops and art galleries. Its restaurant scene has thrived with the arrival of Galvin Bistro de Luxe, Providores and L’Autre Pied. As you’d expect, the neighbourhood’s hotel scene is beginning to catch up, with smaller boutique properties such as The Mandeville, and The Doyle Collection’s Marylebone Hotel opening up to complement historic grande dames The Landmark and The Langham. The latest hotel to join this growing enclave is Ten Manchester Street – the debut hotel launched by Arab Investments Ltd’s newly formed City & Country Hotels subsidiary, and operated by Bespoke Hotels.
Architects and interior designers The Frederick Gibberd Partnership have completed a refurbishment and extension of an existing hostel in central London to create a luxury hotel comprising 45 guestrooms over five floors, with the top floor becoming a VIP master suite.
Explains Marzia Deluigi of The Frederick Gibberd Partnership: “The building has been refurbished to a high standard with a totally revised interior plan and retention of the external façade. A new extension houses the management office plus a terrace for guests. Interior design was also carried out by our practice and was developed to enhance the elegance of the property with a timeless classical style.”
Guestrooms include one master suite, eight junior suites, two accessible rooms, four rooms with terraces, plus thirty standard rooms. The highlight is the Grand Suite, with its own separate living area, featuring Christoper Guy lounge furniture, kitchenette, separate WC and in-built 36” flatscreen TV and sound system. The master bedroom area has a king size bed and additional 36” flatscreen TV, en suite freestanding bath and rainshower, Aveda toiletries, robe and slippers, tea making facilities and espresso coffee machine.
There is a lounge bar and restaurant on the ground floor, and, unusually for London, an outdoor smoking Cigar Lounge & Terrace, with a bespoke humidor designed by Hunters & Frankau – the UK supplier of authentic Cuban cigars.
The overall feel is a timeless modern-classical style, rich with detail and luxury. Christopher Guy, who have built up a reputation for high-end hotel work, working with chains such as Hilton, Hyatt and Four Seasons, and independent hotels such as Sandy Lane Barbados, The Lanesborough London, and The G Hotel Galway, have been integral in delivering The Frederick Gibberd Partnership’s design vision. They have supplied a wide selection of dramatic furniture designs including hand-carved statement chairs and sofas, dramatic large-scale mirrors, luxurious upholstered headboards as well as elegant tables, desks and cabinets.
Many of the pieces feature Christopher Guy’s signature ‘Chris-X’ legs. Other recognisable Christopher Guy hallmarks include intricate carved detailing such as scrolled arms on the chairs. Bespoke sizes and finishes were created for specific space requirements, such as the custom-made wine rack in the restaurant.
A variety of fabric suppliers have contributed to the rich, sumptuous feel of the interiors, including Harlequin, Sahco, Romo, Casamance, Pinewood, Christopher Guy, and Kvadrat. Bathrooms were designed in conjunction with the contracts team at CP Hart, who supplied all sanitary and brassware.
“We launched Bermondsey Square Hotel right in the midst of the recession earlier this year to critical acclaim giving us plenty of confidence, therefore we are excited about what impact the design and luxury product Ten Manchester Street will have on the market, it really is an exceptional property to have in the Bespoke portfolio,” says Haydn Fentum CEO of Bespoke Hotels.
“The location coupled with the design and interiors of Ten Manchester Street have exceeded our expectations and with Bespoke managing and marketing the property we have no doubt our hotel will thrive even in these challenging times. Ten Manchester Street looks to become the jewel in our hotel collection.”
